The Inaugural Theodore Fire Trail Runs

3km/5km, Saturday 5 July, 1997

Course Description: Gently undulating on well surfaced fire trails surrounding the southern Canberra suburb of Theodore. The 3km run is basically an out and back course using the western trail. The 5km run does a 2km out and back section on the eastern trail, then follows the 3km course.

Race Weather: Not too bad for winter in Canberra. Fine, sunny, a southerly breeze and about 12 degrees.

Race Manager: Ewen Thompson.

Race Officials: Gordon Nightingale - a big thankyou for helping set-up the course, Doug Fry, Raine Thompson, Trevor Vogler, James Bromhead, Damien Rutledge, Jela Zotovic.

Race History: A very historic occasion for the ACT Cross Country Club. The first time an event has been conducted in Theodore. In mid-1996, David Gates and myself decided to pursue the Cross Country Club's "Hardingesque" policy of bringing new events to the calendar. We came up with a course which was scenic, easy to mark, reasonably easy to run, almost AA Certified, and within walking distance of our homes. Who could ask for more?

Race Report: The 3km event was a two-way race between juniors Scott Imhoff and Michael McCamley, with Scott prevailing by 2 seconds. Mick Corlis in the first of three races for the day finished third. Elizabeth Simpson won the female race from improving SCT junior Michelle Ward-Pearson and Leanne Fletcher. Reclusive Top-40 Country artist Brian Letton pulled on the Ascics for a 14 minute run.

Anthony Perry took the 5km out hard with Danny O'Dea and Luke Grattan in hot pursuit. After 2km all three were together. "Anthony was the fittest out there," said Danny afterwards. "He can't run downhill though. I was also worried about Luke, who seemed to be doing it easy." Danny broke away from Luke on the last 600m downhill run to the finish for a comfortable win. Luke was aware of Anthony's close presence and did enough to hold second place. "You never know when it might be your last Cross Country Club win," said Danny in explaining his motivation. This proved an unfounded worry as he won the West Basin 10 miler the following weekend. Andy Hogg in a battle of the orienteers came from behind to take fourth place from Anthony Scott. Another orienteer, Nicki Taws was the first female finisher, 37 seconds clear of an injured Fiona Jorgensen. Sarah Fein was not far behind in third place with Keri Vaughan finishing fourth. Former Canberra Runner editor Martin Miles helped fill out the field.

Numbers in both races were quite good for a low-key event. Quite a few people doubled with a few 'crazies' also running Gordon's Mountain Race which started 10 minutes after the 5k had finished. Unfortunately due to illness, Julie's hot drinks and biscuits were unavailable and sorely missed. Most post-race comments were favourable and with any luck it will be on again next year. "I didn't mind the 42k trip from Charnwood," said Trevor Vogler. "It reminds you just how far a marathon is and I've now seen a new part of the world".

Doug Fry's Report for the ACTCCC Website:

The two courses, new to the ACT Cross Country Club calendar, showed that Ewen Thompson has maintained his reputation for introducing new courses to the racing Calendar.
As well as the new courses near Hughes Scout Hall in Garran, Ewen has designed this course, especially with spectators in mind, they get a good look at the runners three times on the short course, and the long course runners five times, as runners run the loops around the Electricity substation, and along the fire trails.

This was evident in the 5 km race, when Anthony Perry was in the lead, hotly pursued by Danny O'Dea at the second loop around the sub-station, Danny O'Dea powering away in the second half of the fire trail to come home the winner, while in the shorter race, Scott Imhoff led all the way, closely followed by Michael McCamley, with a two seconds gap over the line.

For those wanting to round out the afternoon, a mountain run, organised by Gordon Nightingale completed the program. Unfortunately, due to some markers having been moved before the run started, some confusion occurred during the run, with the lead runner waiting at the moved mark, for the rest of the field to advise which option to take. Several other runners ran longer then they should, and one runner returned along the outward course. A search party was in progress when the final runner returned, the search party eventually returning to find that the "lost" runner had returned.

Missing from this event was the ever welcome hot tea, milo, coffee after the event. Please turn up next week Julie.

7.5 km Mountain Race

Note the course marker was changed by persons unknown, before the run so the distance run may differ from 7.5 km, see also notes below, about the lead runner and other runners. Unfortunately, due to some markers having been moved before the run started, some confusion occurred during the run, with the lead runner waiting at the moved mark spot, for the rest of the field to advise which option to take.

Several other runners ran longer then they should, and one runner returned along the outward course. A search party was in progress when the final runner returned, the search party eventually returning to find that the "lost" runner had returned.
