Ewen's Running Diary - 1993

This page is my running diary from 1993, the year I turned 36. Apart from a hamstring injury it was a good year of running and racing although I would have liked to have run higher mileage. There were 102 days when I didn't run. I ran 3,211 km - an average of just over 60 km per week.

My best results during 1993 were: 100m - 14.6, 200m - 29.6, 400m - 65.3, 800m - 2:22.2, 1500m - 4:49.1, 3000m - 10:16.4, 5000m - 17:59.8, 2k Steeplechase - 7:45.6, 3k Steeplechase - 11:25.8, 400m Hurdles 76.2, 1 Mile road - 5:12.1, 4k road 14:35, 5k road - 18:48, 10k road - 39:29, Half Marathon - 85:25, 12k Cross Country - 56:36, High Jump - 1.50m.

AM - Easy run with David Gates to Gordon and back at 5:00/km pace.

6.00pm. Race: Vets' Track 'Fun' Night - 100m in 14.6, 300m in 47.2 PB, 200m in 30.1, 60m in 9.0, 400m in 69.5. Finished 4th in the 'Attrition Race' over 7 laps (last runner each lap stops).

30 5.00am. Race: Palm Beach to Manly 30k - 75th in 2:17:06 (4:34/km). Started easy, although faster than last year. Sore legs early in the run due to the hard sprints on Thursday night. Eased off the last 8k to finish with Bruce. Quite tired last 6k. Splits: 46:52, 43:52, 22:27 (5k), 23:54 (5k). Humid. Good training run. Calves sore afterwards.

6 7.00pm. Race: Interclub - 4k Fun Run in 16:19 (easy). Breathing OK but sore legs, especially the calves. Also ran the 2k Steeplechase in 8:39 - Terrible, misjudged first water jump. No confidence with wet and slippery shoes. No spring in the legs. Calves sore.

Run back to Wannisassa to pick up the car. Felt OK, legs a little better.

5 7.00pm. Race: Vets' Track. Ran 1000m of the 1500m in 3:12, tired legs. 800m split was 2:32. Bruce ran 4:48 in the 1500m, 2 secs ahead of Brian McGlynn. Also, 6-lap handicap (2460m) in 8:47 (3:34/km) - running with Bruce, passing Jim White with 200m to go. Felt good.

6.00pm. Track, Calwell. 4 x 500m in 1:39.6, 1:36.3, 1:36.6, 1:38.7 with 300m jog/walk recoveries. Hard effort. Windy. Still tired. Possibly a 10:20 3k race on Tuesday?
Week 02 65k - Haven't recovered from Palm Beach to Manly. Weight 74.0kg.

8 7.30pm. Race: Interclub - 4k Fun Run 'easy' in 17:23 (4:21/km). Not slow enough. Legs felt good. Afterwards, 3000m in 10:29.8 (3:30/km). Got stuck behind slower runners. Could have run low 10:20s. Splits: 3:25.3, 3:34.5, 3:29.8. Finished just ahead of Miriam Bankovsky. Weekly mileage too low. Kerryn McCann ran 9:21 and Krishna Stanton 2:13.8 in the 800m.

8.00pm. Race: Vets' Track - 3000m Steeplechase - 2nd in 11:29.9. Even pace, ahead of Alan Williams. Wore spikes which worked well. Good hurdles and water jump.

11 Thredbo Running Week - Bush track up the river with John Sauer, Sandy Redshaw and Paul Woodhouse in 49:20. Fast running, 28 minutes up and 21 minutes back.

8 10.00am. Race: Kosciusko Classic 8k - 38th in 39:32. Walk 10k to and from the start. Race was 3k down then 5k back up to the top of Kosci. Cool and windy. Ran hard on the downhill, some walking on the uphill.

6 10.00am. Race: Thredbo 6k Fun Run - 28th in 23:25 (3:54/km). Faded the last 2km, noticing the altitude. Was ahead of Bruce (16th) at 4k. Ran too fast early for my fitness/freshness.
Week 03 68k - Enjoyed the weekend at Thredbo. Weight 74.0kg.

7.00pm. Race: Interclub - 1500m in 5:06.0. Tired, 81 sec last lap. Also, 4k Fun Run 'hard' in 14:54 (3:43/km). Also, 2000m Steeplechase steady pace, training shoes, in 8:01.0.

9 7.00pm. Race: Vets' Track - 800m - 3rd in 2:22.2 with splits of 72/70. Quite pleased with this, although no speed in the first lap. Bruce ran 2:26. Jogged the 4k fun run course in 19:50. 7-lap handicap in 11:25.

7.00pm. Race: Vets' Track - 1500m - 4th B-Grade in 4:55.4. Ran from the back of the pack. Lost a sprint with Tony Booth in the last 100m. Tired legs. Also, A and B 3000s - 11:33.0 in the first race with Elaine C and 11:24.0 in the second race. Felt OK.

6.00pm. Race: CCC - Summer Series Lake Ginninderra 7.1k - 39th in 27:31 (3:52/km). Ran well for 4k then faded and backed off the effort. Charlie 26:29. Debbie Hoare 26:40.

8 8.00pm. Race: ACT 5000m Championships - 12th (B-Grade) in 18:12.3 (3:38/km). Just not fit enough to run 17:40. Started too fast, chasing Gunnar Bursell. May have run 17:50s with even pacing and no wind. Splits: 3:27.7, 3:34.5, 3:47.1 (10:49.2), 3:47.9, 3:35.1. Get fit!

Week 11 47k - Aerobic fitness not great. Need to run more! Weight 73.0kg.

7.00am. Stromlo with Nigel Coldrick. Deek's run via Pipe Flat to Uriarra and Mt Stromlo in 1:56:46 (:52/km). Steady, legs tired but breathing good.

6.00pm. Race: Parliament House Relays 10 x 1637m. Ran 2 legs, first for SCT in 5:42 and second for Vets in 5:43 (3:29/km pace).

16 8.00am. Stromlo with Kevin Bonnett and Geoff Monro following the AIS pack the first few kms (Simon Doyle, Deek, Andy Lloyd, Rod Higgins, Carolyn Schuwalow, Sue Hobson etc). They were running 4 minute km pace after the first easy 2k. We took short-cuts and finished in 71:45 (4:29/km). Evening swim, 1200m at Tuggeranong.
Week 49 94k - Good 3000m but can run faster! Weight 73.0kg.

4.00pm. Race: GIO 'Mini' Triathlon. My first triathlon! 400m swim, 18k bike, 5k run. 1:09:27. Splits: 9:46, 39:51, 19:48. Mid-pack in the swim, slow bike with a headwind, good run passing about 30 runners.
