My running goal for 2012 - Run 5k in under 20 minutes.

10 7.04pm. Wagga - Out/back Henwood Park, Boat Club to SE corner of Lake Albert. 58:10 (5:49/km) @ AHR 135 (82%), MHR 145. Kinvara. Interesting. Easy on the legs but stressful for the heart. Donated blood this morning - very high RS number. Also, haemoglobin was low at 130g/L (previously 141). RS 785. Hot, 29°C; calm. [M]

Decided to run a bit below race effort as my running has been ordinary since last Saturday (high HRs). 3.5k warm-up with Carol, Bruce & Heidi in bush behind stadium. RS 699. Warm, 17°C; calm. [B]

Warm-up + diagonal flagpole relays lower grass including moderate (4:45/km) strides in last 15 minutes. Felt much better than last Monday. RS 739. Warm, 22°C; sunny. [L]

10 6.16pm. Race: YCRC S/Series: Boathouse (east) '5k' - 44th in 22:39 (4:38/km) @ AHR 146 (89%), MHR 155. Grey Frees. Short course - best guess it was 4.88k. Started easy, then ran faster than I wanted to so I could finish ahead of Charlie. Splits: 11:20, 11:19. 3k warm-up, 2k warm-down. RS 678. Mild, 16°C; breezy. [U]

AHR, MHRs: 136,146 / 150,152 / 152,153 / 152,153 / 150,151 / 148,149 / 147,148 / 147,148 / 146,147 / 148,149. Followed Burkie for 3k then gradually fell back. 10 6.20pm. Race: Vets' 1 Mile. 13th in 7:51.11 (4:53/km) - no HR data. Old Frees. Ran with Ruth and Bruce (from Sydney) with the aim of running 2 minutes per lap (an 8-minute mile). Goal: 5k in under 20 minutes. Result: Failed. My fastest time was 22:14.0

Races: I raced 40 times in 2012. None were age 50+ PBs. Track races: 3000m in 12:59.93, 5000m in 22:14.0, 10,000m in 47:46.96 and 12,575m in 1 hour. Also, 5k road in 22:21, 10k road in 45:11, Melbourne Half Marathon in 1:44:30, City to Surf in 67:54 and Stromlo 5k in 22:43.

Numbers: I ran 3,774 kilometres, an average of 71.2 per week. There were no days when I didn't run (maintained a 'run-streak' throughout the year, running a minimum of 5k per day.

Other words: In terms of race performances, 2013 was on the whole, disappointing. I was really happy with one race — the 45:11 Gold Coast 10k. I think I was capable of a 21:40 track 5000 in the perfect race, but perfect track 5000s in Canberra are rare.

My maximum heart-rate is about 161 (changed this at the GC 10k from the 164 I've been using - highest I've recorded this year is 160).
